Use of unleaded petrol in vintage
In one of the web sites of the vintage car belonging to a member who had not shared an interesting experience in the forum. Below is the Readers Digest version.
The new owner (called John) had seen the car of your dreams vintage advertised on the same website listed above. John found some he saw and helped many members of the forum validated the car was cute. John an appointment for a test drive the car. When John the car much nicer than the pictures shown. The owner has decided that John was a serious buyer and not a rapper "band." They decided to bring the car to take a test drive. The car started on the first turn of the key, smooth idle, and ran perfectly. The owner, John On the trip back. And while John was quiet, was able to easily sing the tires to get in the 2nd and 3rd place.
John bought the car, loaded it into his trailer, and was now the proud owner of a beautiful game 1970 Super Nova. Since the car was almost perfect and has no job, John started driving a couple of local car cruises and classic car shows to get an idea of the car.
The car show day, is about one hour and half away. After waxing of the car, and control of liquids, John filled the gas tank. A few miles away Juan stopped at a red traffic light. When the light turned green, he walked away and heard a light knocking / pinging noise under acceleration. The sound grew louder the longer it took the car. The only time that John heard the noise in the acceleration. When he drove the car "easy" that there is an egg under the accelerator was almost nonexistent ping and tolerable. If he has to pass another vehicle and was required to accelerate, the sound was worse, and the engine did not have the same power as the first test. Unlike the noise, the car worked perfectly. John drove the car to and from the program, but was very anxious and nervous because I thought I had bought a lemon. And he was not a happy camper.
Long story short, a number of people who read the story of John began asking questions. A group of them even took a trip special John's house for a test drive with John to see if I could determine what was going to take. During the discussion of the attendees asked Juan what he changes to the car after purchase. John answered: "I have not touched except to wash, wax, and filled the tank." The passerby said, "I'm here jump" and then asked "what kind of gas you put into it?
Let me go ahead here in the story, and explain why this is so important.
High performance cars of the '60s and early 70s require high performance gasoline. Unless the engine is adjusted pre-1971 cars need high octane leaded petrol and functioning properly. Because leaded gasoline is no longer sold in the United States, the owners of these vehicles have the leaded version (about $ 2 - $ 5 per bottle) purchase. A bottle in the Generally good for a tank of gas. Lead is essential because it acts as a lubricant for the internal engine parts and prevents premature wear. Engines built in 1971 and more later are designed to operate on unleaded gasoline to be replaced so adding the line is not necessary. In fact, lead is harmful to the catalyst needed to cars after 1977 manufactured, and is harmful to the environment. Add an engine to an additive in a pre-1971, literally, a unit often beat to death.
John's experience is something that happens to many owners of vintage cars. Nova The reason it worked very well together with the previous owner was due to the use of a 92-octane gasoline and a bottle of added of lead to substitute any Fill-Up. When John filled the tank with 87 octane gasoline the same used for the daily driver. He never gave a thought to what kind of gas was. Most people do not buy cars gas mileage and period of the reasons the economy. Therefore lasted only a few weekends before the local leaders who must fill John your gas tank again. Now the engine was out of design, "which means it was not designed to run on unleaded fuel low. The engine started to ping and hit with tax once the new gas was burning.
When John told his story in the forum, there were about one quarter of a tank of gas left economy. He added a bottle of octane booster, a bottle of replacing the lead, and filled the rest of the tank with 92 octane premium gasoline. Since then the car of John's work perfectly.
An original pre 70 engine which is not adjusted for unleaded fuel is required a little help in the department of gas. Always use the highest octane possible. A good bottle of octane booster and lead in place will help to maximize performance and engine longevity. You should buy the highest octane gas possible by a high-octane playing and prevent pinging. Supreme unleaded (92 octane) is good and should be used for most motors and daily driving.
The owners of the really high performance engines, which then means a relationship 10.0:1 compression, you need an octane booster to the engine running. octane boosters also help if you are going to career car from time to time or when you want a bit more power. Remember not race in the category of fuel 104 octane or more expensive and sometimes hard to find.
Racing fuel should be used if you really build an engine for racing and is an overkill for a street car.
